DETAILED EXAMINATION PRIOR TO THE SURGERY

The mammary gland needs to be fully developed before a breast reduction can be performed, which places a lower age limit of 18 on the procedure. It is a good idea to be aware that a breast reduction can make breastfeeding more difficult or impossible.
The plastic surgeon examines the breasts and refers the patient for a mammography. 

PAIN-FREE SURGERY UNDER GENERAL ANAESTHETIC

A breast reduction involves removing skin and breast tissue. The breast becomes smaller and gains an improved posture. A lighter bust usually alleviates problems with pain in the neck and shoulders and physical activity becomes comfortable again.

A breast reduction is always performed under general anaesthetic. And in all operations that correct the shape of the breast, any asymmetry is also corrected. The female breast shape and softness normally returns within six months.
 

AFTER SURGERY

The patient spends the night being monitored in Eira Hospital’s comfortable in-patient unit.

It is possible to return to work 2–4 weeks after the surgery, depending on how demanding the work is. A sick note for 2–4 weeks is issued for reductions of large breasts. You can gradually begin training three weeks after the surgery.

Scars appear around the nipple and on the lower part of the breast. The scars are initially red, but become lighter with time.

The price of the operation includes as sports bra, which acts as support bandage in the weeks following the surgery.
