At Eira Hospital in Helsinki, you will be treated by the most experienced obesity treatment team in Finland that is specialised in the comprehensive treatment of obesity. The treatment will be provided by our multiprofessional team that includes a specialist of internal medicine, a surgeon, a nutritionist specialised in the treatment of obesity, a nurse and an anaesthetist. If necessary, you have access to the services of a psychologist, physiotherapist and psychiatrist.

WHAT IS OBESITY?

Obesity is a disease in which the proportion of fat in the body is too large.

Obesity is classified according to body mass index (BMI), which you get by dividing your weight by your height squared, e.g. 100 kg/(1.7 m x 1.7 m) = 34.6.

THE WEIGHT CLASSES FOR BMI IN ADULTS ARE:

 Underweight   18.4 or less
 Healthy weight  
  18.5 - 24.9
 Overweight   25.0 - 29.9
 Obesity I   30.0 - 34.9
 Obesity II   35.0 - 39.9
 Obesity III   40.0

 

If your BMI is more than 30, you should consult a healthcare expert. If your BMI is over 40, it is pertinent to talk about very severe or morbid obesity.

WHY SHOULD OBESITY BE TREATED?

Severe obesity is a common and chronic disease. The disease makes everyday life more difficult and reduces quality of life in many ways. Obesity is associated with increased blood pressure, high cholesterol values and joint problems. WHICH TREATMENT METHODS DOES EIRA OBESITY CLINIC OFFER?

Eira Hospital is the largest private hospital in Finland specialised in the treatment of obesity.

We offer three treatment methods:
1. Bariatric surgery
2. New Orbera method
3. Conventional treatment of obesity.

We will always map your situation together with you in order to determine which alternative is best for you.

Bariatric surgery is one of the most effective treatments for severe obesity. We perform both gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy operations. Another alternative for a lifestyle change is the Orbera method that does not require surgery. Our Obesity Clinic provides you with several non-surgical treatment alternatives to suit your specific needs.

Bariatric surgery is a suitable alternative if your BMI is over 40, or over 35 if you have one of the diseases associated with obesity. The Orbera method is suitable for patients with BMI over 27.
