MEN’S PROBLEMS SHOULD NOT BE MADE LIGHT OF
At Eira Hospital, you quickly receive an assessment from a specialist in urology for urination problems, PSA value, risk of prostate cancer and other problems men suffer from. The earlier the cause of the problem can be established, the quicker this can be resolved.
REGULAR CHECKS OF PSA VALUE MAKE IT POSSIBLE TO DETECT PROSTATE CANCER FASTER AT AN EARLY STAGE
PSA (prostate-specific antigen) is a protein produced in the prostate, elevated values may indicate prostate cancer. Regular checks of the PSA value make it possible to detect prostate cancer at an early stage.
The PSA value can rise temporarily when the prostate is inflamed or when there is a benign enlargement of the prostate. A constantly elevated PSA points to prostate cancer and the elevation continues increasing as the tumour grows.
We recommend that men over the age of 50 get tested once a year.
If there is a family history of prostate cancer, it is a good idea to start checking the value at a younger age.
Please note that the doctor cannot diagnose or exclude prostate cancer on the basis of the PSA test alone, but an elevated value is an indication that supplementary investigations are necessary.
